Robert Dash Garden

In 1989 Semel shot the garden of artist Robert Dash for Country Living Magazine. The two-acre property—located in Sagaponack, New York—that Dash curated for decades is known as Madoo Conservancy. Dash was a fine art painter whose work can be found in the Museum of Modern Art and the Guggenheim Museum, but it was Madoo Conservancy that was his lifelong project. Most of the fixtures there were sourced from found objects, like telephone poles cut to form walkways. Madoo is still open to the public; visitors have been coming to relax or take gardening classes for 20 years. Semel’s images of the space depict artistic flares that make the landscape unique.
